 Clinics are luring thousands of ­takers for nose jobs, breast implants and facelifts with ­discounts of at least HALF PRICE.

 Mum Rita Nugent, 29, was delighted to save a few ­thousand pounds on an op but she ended up ­DISFIGURED.

 She said: “These types of clinics attract people who haven’t got much money. People I know got bank loans to pay.

 “In my opinion they don’t care about their patients. They just want to get as much money as possible.

 “Women must remember they’re not buying a second-hand car. They’re having a major operation on their body.”

 A People investigation found one clinic where at least five women claim they were left with injuries after their ­procedures went ­wrong. Rita was one.

She told us: “I decided to fix a bump on the bridge of my nose and a lot of the clinics were quoting me up to €5,500.”

 When Rita, a full-time mum to Caleb, six, saw a clinic offering to do it for €2,200, it was too good to resist.

 But she said: “Alarm bells should have started ringing when the first consultation lasted little more than 10 minutes.

 Damaged

 “And within half an hour of leaving I had a call on my mobile from the clinic manager saying I would lose my slot if I didn’t pay by that afternoon.

 “I called back and paid up in full. Then five days later I had an appointment at the clinic to have the op.

“They gave me no time to reconsider. They just wanted to seal the deal.”

 Things started to go badly wrong ­almost immediately after surgery.

 Rita said: “I woke up afterwards and when I looked in a mirror I had ­congealed blood all over my face.

 “It was like ­something from a horror movie. I asked to speak to the surgeon to ask what happened but I was told by a nurse he wasn’t available.

 “Later that day I was discharged and given some paracetamol. For the next three days I kept calling the clinic but got no reply so I just decided to go there.

 “I had stitches all over the septum in the middle of my nose. I was in severe pain. I had a terrible taste in the back of my mouth and I was ­generally unwell.

 “The surgeon persuaded me I had to give it more time to heal.

 “But he still didn’t explain why the tip of my nose had been so damaged.”

 Over the next eight weeks Rita ­said she returned several times for stitches to be taken out but never saw her original ­surgeon, Dr Adeyinka Adeogba.

 The wounds took six months to heal, by which point part of Rita’s nose had caved in, as our picture shows.

 She believed her only option was to return every two to three weeks for a year to have fillers injected into her nose.

 Rita, from Liverpool, said: “My nose still looked like a mess. It was only after I was told I could get it fixed on the NHS if I had a referral from my GP that I finally had reconstructive surgery.”

 Some of the other pictures of women after operations at the clinic – the Birkdale, in Crosby, Liverpool, are too horrific to publish in a family newspaper.Another woman operated on by Dr Adeogba revealed her horrific injuries after she went for breast implants.

 The bank worker, 30, who is too ­embarrassed to give her identity, saw a Birkdale advert offering €550 off.

 After a consultation in August 2010 with Dr Adeogba she said she took out a loan of €5,500 to pay for implants.

 He told us: “Everything about him and his clinic seemed very clean and efficient.” But four days after her operation she said her left nipple started oozing fluid.

 A Birkdale duty nurse ­reassured her the problem would go away. But it didn’t. The left nipple started to turn black.

Finally she went to an NHS hospital where she said they told her there was permanent blood-supply damage.

 To save catastrophic harm the implants were taken out immediately – but she lost half of her left breast.

 Tearfully, she said: “My wedding is ­going ahead next month but I could never wear a bikini on honeymoon now.”

 Three years ago another patient, Michelle Hemmings, 36, had breast ­implants from a different surgeon at Birkdale. Michelle, an office ­manager from Liverpool, said: “I woke up and saw a ­dressing on my stomach. The surgeon said they had dropped cauterising ­instruments on to me by mistake.

 “I’m now left with burn scars on my ­stomach and I can’t wear a bikini.”

 Wields

 The Birkdale, which also has an address in London’s Harley Street, has been ­heavily advertising cut-price cosmetic surgery such as boob jobs for €2,200 in a link-up with Groupon.co.uk.

 The Independent Healthcare Advisory Service said: “Breast augmentation ­simply can’t be done safely at these prices.”

 The General Medical Council said they have had no complaints about Dr Adeogba. Birkdale director Dr Promod Bhatnagar said: “The clinic cannot be held responsible for surgical outcomes. It is the surgeon who wields the knife, not Birkdale staff.

 “The clinic makes sure surgeons are fully qualified. Surgeons you refer to in your article are on the specialist register of the GMC. It is the GMC that deals with any concerns about competence.

 “Even though the clinic is not ­responsible for surgeons’ acts, it does make sure surgeons with right skills and qualifications are allowed to practise there. There have been about eight cases which had ongoing concerns.

 “What a client pays for the surgery has nothing to do with the treatment they receive. You get the same quality.”

Miss Burges and Beryl Atkins, director of Birmingham cosmetic surgery clinic Transpire, defended the event and explained that the winner would need to pass strict screening before undergoing any surgery. Miss Atkins commented ‘This is not something we are doing on a whim,’  

The controversial event had received widespread criticism from surgeons and womens groups but one winner was drawn from the hat and is now in line to have £4,000 worth of plastic surgery of her choice.

After buying a £25 ticket to the event, Lesley Towle picked up the prize , which was staged in the Clubten nightclub in East London and filmed for Living TV.  

The runner up prize was a course of Botox, while other prizes included teeth whitening, semi-permanent makeup and pole dancing lessons.

“The General Medical Council should step in to protect patients and make it clear that they will review the license of any surgeon who becomes party to this abuse of trust by accepting to operate on patients who win such prizes or recruited with the inducement of cut price surgery or limited offers.”

The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons have commented with a statement from their President Fazel Fatah;

“This programme is advertising an unproven technique without any independent challenge or advice that is not commercially driven. It is highly irresponsible to offer stem cell breast enhancement unless is it part of a controlled,  clinical trial conducted in a specialist centre under the care of a proficient specialist  with access to investigating and  treating breast disease. The main associations are working to develop guidelines on the use of fat transfer in the breast and promoting this procedure to the public is viewed with very grave concern. There is no reliable evidence based on peer reviewed, controlled clinical trials to indicate that the use of stem cells in the breast of a young woman is safe or necessary. This highly sensitive procedure carried out by a non-specialist should not be given publicity and is doing the millions of women who watched it a huge disservice.”

The British Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons spokesperson and consultant plastic surgeon Simon Kay said; 

“The female breast is highly sensitive and we know from generations of safety studies that breast implants are safe.  However, this stem cell therapy is new and its effects are currently uncertain.  Like all new procedures it should be carefully evaluated in controlled scientific circumstances over a number of years before being carefully rolled out to more general use. BAPRAS deplores any short cuts to patient safety and urges ITV to protect the public by adding a cautionary note to any publicity they continue to give to this technique.”

 To conclude, Richard Rainsbury, President of the Association of Breast Surgery said;

“We echo these views entirely. Women should be fully informed that the long term safety of this approach is unknown, and that they could be puting themselves at risk.”

These figures highlighted the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures performed during 2009 for both men and women, which was the male breast reduction or “moob” operation, clinically known as Gynaecomastia.  This procedure has escalated by 80% since the year before and Mr Juma was asked why he thought this was.

Mr Juma was able to give his own experience and view on the matter based on his private practices for cosmetic surgery in Liverpool, Merseyside, Cheshire and Lancashire.  He explained that cosmetic surgery for men is more openly discussed over recent years and has become more popular due to the media.  CertainTV shows promote awareness regarding cosmetic surgery, along with other similar series such as Embarrasing Bodies, featuring embarrassing issues and which outlines positive ways to correct problems or seek treatment.

The advice from Mr Juma is always to research a surgeon and seek their accreditations, for example the GMC (General Medical Council) BMA (British Medical Association) and memberships such as the BAAPS (British Assocation Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons) or other regulatory bodies in the UK.  It is extremely important to select a registered and accredited surgeon and feel at ease with that surgeon to enable a patient to express their expectation of surgery/treatment.

There were some interesting highlights in view of the recession, which seems not to have significantly affected the rate of cosmetic surgery procedures carried out since 2008.  There was actually a rise of 6.7% overall with an increased rate of 21% for male surgery performed.  The most popular operation for men was the male breast reduction (gnaecomastia) which escalated by 80% since last year, but women still accounted for 90% of all procedures performed during 2009.

Feel Younger Cosmetic Surgery of Liverpool based at Rodney Street have been liaising with the BAAPS (British Association of Aesthetic & Plastic Surgeons) this week with reference to the latest Cosmetic Surgery trends and statistics in the UK.

The BAAPS compiles a press release on a yearly basis, which make headlines nationally and locally in the newspapers, on the radio and on television.  They are currently compiling these figures to reveal which cosmetic procedures for men and women have been most popular during 2009.

Highlights of 2008:

• 34,187 surgical procedures were carried out by BAAPS members in 2008, over a 5% increase from 2007, when 32,453 were performed
• Breast augmentation was once again the most popular procedure for women with 8,439 performed (up 30% from 2007) this year

• Women had 31,183 procedures in 2008, up from 29,572 (an increase of over 5%)
• Abdominoplasty(tummy tucks) also had a striking increase for both men and women with 3,638 procedures carried out, a rise of 30% from 2007, when only 2,799 were performed.
• The majority of cosmetic surgery is still carried out on women (91%), while male surgery increased by over 4% with 3,004 surgical procedures carried out (2,881 in 2007)

• Male breast reduction moved into the top five procedures for men (taking over from facelifts as the 5^th most popular) increasing by a staggering 44%with 323 procedures this year (Only 22 were performed in 2003 – an increase of well over 1000%!)
• Rhinoplasty continued to be the top procedure for men, with 698 undertaken by BAAPS members (without much of a change from 2007) but by far the most impressive percentage rise was in the number of male brow lift procedures, which went up by 60%
• Otoplasty (ear correction) increased by 23% with 1,260 procedures (up from 1,024 last year) carried out on both men and women.

A total of 34,187 procedures were carried out in 2008 by BAAPS members in their private practices, compared to 32,453 in 2007. The 2008 results indicate that surgical numbers continue to grow, with a 5.4% rise over the previous year.

The top surgical procedures for men & women in 2008 were, in order of popularity:

• Breast augmentation:                 8,449 – up 30% from last year
• Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery):  5,130 – down 10%
• Face/Neck Lift:                         4,547 – up 1.7%
• Breast Reduction:                      3,845 – up 13%
• Abdominoplasty:                        3,638 – up 30%
• Liposuction:                               3,249 – down 29%
• Rhinoplasty:                              3,065 – up 1.5%
• Otoplasty (ear correction):         1,260 – up 23%
• Brow lifts                                  1,004 – up 4%

Womenhad 91% of all cosmetic procedures in 2008 (31,183, up from 29,572 in 2007). The top five surgical procedures for women in 2008 were: breast augmentation (8,439), blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery (4,520 – down 12% on last year), face/neck lift (4,355, a rise of 2.8%), abdominoplasty or tummy tucks (3,526 – up an impressive 30.5%), and breast reduction (3,522, an increase of 11%).

Menhad 3,004 cosmetic procedures in 2008 (up from 2,881 in 2007).  The top five surgical procedures for men in 2008 were: rhinoplasty (698, down by 2.5%), eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty (610, an increase of 9%), ear correction or otoplasty (508, a staggering increase of 21.5%), liposuction (479, a decrease of 18%) and male breast reduction (323, an impressive rise of 44%).
