Victims of cosmetic surgery cowboys

Jul 17 2011 by Matthew Barbour, The People

WOMEN attracted by bargain offers have rushed to sign up for cosmetic surgery that has led to a series of devastating results, the patients have claimed.

Clinics are luring thousands of takers for nose jobs, breast implants and facelifts with discounts of at least HALF PRICE.

Mum Rita Nugent, 29, was delighted to save a few thousand pounds on an op but she ended up DISFIGURED.

She said: “These types of clinics attract people who haven’t got much money. People I know got bank loans to pay.

“In my opinion they don’t care about their patients. They just want to get as much money as possible.

“Women must remember they’re not buying a second-hand car. They’re having a major operation on their body.”

A People investigation found one clinic where at least five women claim they were left with injuries after their procedures went wrong. Rita was one.

She told us: “I decided to fix a bump on the bridge of my nose and a lot of the clinics were quoting me up to €5,500.”

When Rita, a full-time mum to Caleb, six, saw a clinic offering to do it for €2,200, it was too good to resist.

But she said: “Alarm bells should have started ringing when the first consultation lasted little more than 10 minutes.

Damaged

“And within half an hour of leaving I had a call on my mobile from the clinic manager saying I would lose my slot if I didn’t pay by that afternoon.

“I called back and paid up in full. Then five days later I had an appointment at the clinic to have the op.

“They gave me no time to reconsider. They just wanted to seal the deal.”

Things started to go badly wrong almost immediately after surgery.

Rita said: “I woke up afterwards and when I looked in a mirror I had congealed blood all over my face.

“It was like something from a horror movie. I asked to speak to the surgeon to ask what happened but I was told by a nurse he wasn’t available.

“Later that day I was discharged and given some paracetamol. For the next three days I kept calling the clinic but got no reply so I just decided to go there.

“I had stitches all over the septum in the middle of my nose. I was in severe pain. I had a terrible taste in the back of my mouth and I was generally unwell.

“The surgeon persuaded me I had to give it more time to heal.

“But he still didn’t explain why the tip of my nose had been so damaged.”

Over the next eight weeks Rita said she returned several times for stitches to be taken out but never saw her original surgeon, Dr Adeyinka Adeogba.

The wounds took six months to heal, by which point part of Rita’s nose had caved in, as our picture shows.

She believed her only option was to return every two to three weeks for a year to have fillers injected into her nose.

Rita, from Liverpool, said: “My nose still looked like a mess. It was only after I was told I could get it fixed on the NHS if I had a referral from my GP that I finally had reconstructive surgery.”

Some of the other pictures of women after operations at the clinic – the Birkdale, in Crosby, Liverpool, are too horrific to publish in a family newspaper.Another woman operated on by Dr Adeogba revealed her horrific injuries after she went for breast implants.

The bank worker, 30, who is too embarrassed to give her identity, saw a Birkdale advert offering €550 off.

After a consultation in August 2010 with Dr Adeogba she said she took out a loan of €5,500 to pay for implants.

He told us: “Everything about him and his clinic seemed very clean and efficient.” But four days after her operation she said her left nipple started oozing fluid.

A Birkdale duty nurse reassured her the problem would go away. But it didn’t. The left nipple started to turn black.

Finally she went to an NHS hospital where she said they told her there was permanent blood-supply damage.

To save catastrophic harm the implants were taken out immediately – but she lost half of her left breast.

Tearfully, she said: “My wedding is going ahead next month but I could never wear a bikini on honeymoon now.”

Three years ago another patient, Michelle Hemmings, 36, had breast implants from a different surgeon at Birkdale. Michelle, an office manager from Liverpool, said: “I woke up and saw a dressing on my stomach. The surgeon said they had dropped cauterising instruments on to me by mistake.

“I’m now left with burn scars on my stomach and I can’t wear a bikini.”

Wields

The Birkdale, which also has an address in London’s Harley Street, has been heavily advertising cut-price cosmetic surgery such as boob jobs for €2,200 in a link-up with Groupon.co.uk.

The Independent Healthcare Advisory Service said: “Breast augmentation simply can’t be done safely at these prices.”

The General Medical Council said they have had no complaints about Dr Adeogba. Birkdale director Dr Promod Bhatnagar said: “The clinic cannot be held responsible for surgical outcomes. It is the surgeon who wields the knife, not Birkdale staff.

“The clinic makes sure surgeons are fully qualified. Surgeons you refer to in your article are on the specialist register of the GMC. It is the GMC that deals with any concerns about competence.

“Even though the clinic is not responsible for surgeons’ acts, it does make sure surgeons with right skills and qualifications are allowed to practise there. There have been about eight cases which had ongoing concerns.

“What a client pays for the surgery has nothing to do with the treatment they receive. You get the same quality.”

An East-London nightclub promised party-goers the chance to win plastic surgery in a raffle named “My Big Fat Plastic Surgery Prize Draw,” offering up to £4000 worth of cosmetic surgery prizes with Runner-up prizes including botox and fillers, teeth whitening, semi-permanent makeup, and pole dancing lessons.

The cosmetic surgery nightclub draw was labelled “insane and depraved” as per the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) who are the UK association of Plastic Surgery, with their President Fazel Fatah making the following statement:

“We are now seeing a new level of insanity and depravity in the way certain cosmetic surgery providers market and promote their services: life-changing, serious surgical procedures being raffled in an alcohol-fuelled evening extravaganza. The Government is deluded if they think that the commercial sector will exercise self regulation and abide by any voluntary code of conduct of advertising and promotion of surgical procedures to trusting patients. Patients who seek cosmetic surgery are among the most vulnerable group of patients in society and they need to be protected from the greed of commercial advocates. I call upon the Government to ban all advertising of cosmetic surgery and prohibit inducements and offers of any kind of surgery as a lottery prize. I also call on the Care Quality Commission to review licensing of such facilities who are clearly abusing the trust of their patients by trivialising serious medical treatments that include life changing, major invasive surgery. The General Medical Council should step in to protect patients and make it clear that they will review the license of any surgeon who becomes party to this abuse of trust by accepting to operate on patients who win such prizes or recruited with the inducement of cut price surgery or limited offers.”

Mr Ali Juma, a leading Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeon in Merseyside is a member of BAAPS and fully supports the view point of the association. Within the practice of Mr Juma a stringent selection process is carried out during an in depth consultation to evaluate the clinical suitability of each patent, both physically and emotionally for the potential life changing decision.

A complaint to Broadcasting Standards has been submitted following a program on ITV dated 7/6/2011. The “Skin Deep” program highlighted a stem cell breast augmentation performed by a GP, was biased, commercially driven and potentially dangerous to the public, according to the main professional associations.

The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons have commented with a statement from their President Fazel Fatah;

“This programme is advertising an unproven technique without any independent challenge or advice that is not commercially driven. It is highly irresponsible to offer stem cell breast enhancement unless is it part of a controlled, clinical trial conducted in a specialist centre under the care of a proficient specialist with access to investigating and treating breast disease. The main associations are working to develop guidelines on the use of fat transfer in the breast and promoting this procedure to the public is viewed with very grave concern. There is no reliable evidence based on peer reviewed, controlled clinical trials to indicate that the use of stem cells in the breast of a young woman is safe or necessary. This highly sensitive procedure carried out by a non-specialist should not be given publicity and is doing the millions of women who watched it a huge disservice.”

The British Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons spokesperson and consultant plastic surgeon Simon Kay said;

“The female breast is highly sensitive and we know from generations of safety studies that breast implants are safe. However, this stem cell therapy is new and its effects are currently uncertain. Like all new procedures it should be carefully evaluated in controlled scientific circumstances over a number of years before being carefully rolled out to more general use. BAPRAS deplores any short cuts to patient safety and urges ITV to protect the public by adding a cautionary note to any publicity they continue to give to this technique.”

To conclude, Richard Rainsbury, President of the Association of Breast Surgery said;

“We echo these views entirely. Women should be fully informed that the long term safety of this approach is unknown, and that they could be puting themselves at risk.”

Mr Juma who is a leading Plastic and Reconstructive breast surgeon based on Rodney Street in Liverpool agrees with the advice provided by the professional associations and can provide Expert Advice on all aspects of breast surgery.

Are you seeking a natural looking wrinkle treatment?

Many patients return to Feel Younger Cosmetic Surgery at Rodney Street in Liverpool for a “natural” anti aging effect which is administered by a fully registered and experienced Plastic Surgeon, Mr Ali Juma. Mr Juma assesses the expectations of his patients in clinic during consultation and takes time to discuss the permutations of this popular treatment.

When making an initial enquiry at the clinic, a common and frequent request is that the patient wishes to be able to retain some facial movement instead of a completely “frozen” appearance. Most patients favour the treatment for providing a smoother, rested and refreshed look which lasts for an average of 3 months, and which can serve as a huge confidence boost to many.

Selecting a highly experienced clinician to perform this anti aging procedure is crucial to minimise any complications in association with Botulinum Toxin treatment, such as bruising, swelling, drooping of the brow or ptosis. Mr Juma Cosmetic Surgeon carries out a full consultation prior to any injections to ensure the safety of the patient and to eliminate any contraindications which may arise from pre existing health conditions or medications.

How often should you have Botox?

Some patients opt for treatment every 3/4 months, whilst others may prefer to keep it for a special occasion such as a wedding or birthday hence making the choice an individual preference.

What can Botulinum be used for?

• Frown Lines
• Worry Lines
• Periorbital Wrinkles (Crow’s Feet)
• Bunny Lines
• Brow Lift
• Brow Asymmetry
• Drooping Mouth Corners
• Lip Wrinkles
• Platysma Stranding (“Neck Banding”)
• Chest Wrinkles and Vertical Lines
• Hyperhidrosis – Severe Underarm Sweating
• Ophthamological Conditions and Dystonia

Wrinkle relaxing injections consisting of Botox have become extremely popular over the past several years driven by the motivation to remain youthful and beautiful predominantly by women in society today. Botox is a protein which originates from Clostridium Botulinum, it is simple to administer and lasts for approximately 3 months per treatment.

When the Botox is injected into the muscle, it blocks impulses from the nerves which temporarily paralyze the muscles that cause wrinkles, thus allowing them to relax further. The result is that the process of wrinkle formation is minimised causing a smoothing effect which is visible almost after several days and which continues to improve over the next two weeks.

The optimum effects of Botox injections can be seen in 14-21 days and results may vary on individuals depending on the severity of wrinkles and the strength of muscles treated. The results of a treatment lasts for approximately three months after which most patients gradually return to their former appearance. Botox injections can be repeated every 3-4 months and patients who have had Botox treatments over 12 months may only require further treatments every few months.

While Botox has been safely used by millions of patients, it is recommended that pregnant women, or women who are breastfeeding their babies as well as patients suffering from neurologic disease should not use Botox.

It is recommended not to lie flat for 6 hours after treatment or drink alcohol on the evenig after injections, also Mr Juma advises not to take blood thinning medications prior to treatment such as Aspirin, Warfarin, Brufen, Nurofen or Ibuprofen.

Mr Juma of Feel Younger Cosmetic Surgery Liverpool provides a full non surgical service in addition to cosmetic surgery procedures. He is an experienced Cosmetic Surgeon registered with the Plastic Surgery regulatory organisations and who has clinics at the following locations:

Leading Plastic Surgeon Ali Juma from Feel Younger Cosmetic Surgery Liverpool comments on cosmetic and plastic surgery

Laughter Lines

The term is supposed to be taken as a compliment, but for many it’s no more than pointing out the visible aging of the skin, which is not something women like to hear.

With increasing pressure upon women to look younger for longer, and to maintain those taut, youthful bodies post-childbearing, the demand for cosmetic surgery procedures is ever-growing, but increased demand creates increased supply – and this in itself brings risk. When considering cosmetic surgery, it is important to select a registered Plastic or Cosmetic Surgeon who is fully accredited and experienced.

Mr Ali Juma is a leading Consultant Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgeon at the Spire Murrayfield Hospital Wirral in Merseyside. Mr Juma is a member of the Plastic Surgery regulatory bodies in the UK, British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) and British Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS). He is also included on the General Medical Council Specialist Register.

Mr Juma is a Senior Plastic Surgeon in the NHS, an Honorary Lecturer for the University of Liverpool and a Surgical Examiner for the University of Edinburgh. He has also recently received a fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons England ad eundem which is a further accreditation to his achievements.

He has a special clinical interest in breast surgery and provides cosmetic breast procedures, breast reconstructive surgery and a range of cosmetic surgery procedures. Mr Juma spends time to understand the expectations of the patient, using his expertise to formulate a concise treatment plan which incorporates a comprehensive after care package. He understands that women aren’t seeking purely physical change, but that this change is closely linked to their emotional wellbeing, self-esteem and confidence levels.

“I am always delighted when I hear that a patient who has undergone breast reconstructive surgery has had the confidence to wear a bikini on holiday” says Mr Juma.

Mr Juma delivers balanced advice on surgical procedures such as breast enlargement, breast uplift, breast reduction, breast reconstruction and breast asymmetry. He performs body contouring surgery such as tummy tuck, liposuction, arm lift and post weight loss surgery in addition to facial procedures including nose reshaping, eye bag removal, face/neck lifts and ear correction.

Mr Juma says: “My strongest point may also be my weakest, that I am a perfectionist”. This drive for perfection is apparent in every element of his work, whether this is reconstructive surgery for a lady who has suffered breast cancer to a tummy tuck for a mother who has lost her sense of self, to his work with students and in research groups.

There are many reasons why people select cosmetic surgery or non surgical treatments, which range from wanting to remove a mole, smoothing out wrinkles, correcting sun damage, to rejuvenate skin or using such treatments as dermal fillers to achieve a more youthful look by adding volume to soften facial lines.

Whatever your reasons, take the time to speak with Mr Juma and learn more about what he can do for you.

Mr Juma from Feel Younger Cosmetic Surgery in Liverpool provides information on Tummy tuck procedures

A cosmetic surgery poll revealed that the south of England has noted a huge increase in the amount of Abdominoplasty (Tummy tuck) procedures being carried out.

Exeter came first in the poll with tummy tuck procedures up a whopping 260 per cent since 2009 and Bristol came in second having seen a 75 per cent increase in people opting for this procedure. Surprisingly, image conscious London came only third with a 57 percent increase since 2009.

Mr Ali Juma of Feel Younger Cosmetic Surgery in Liverpool, Chester and Wirral offers the Abdominoplasty (Tummy tuck) procedure and has performed many of this type of operation during his position in the NHS as a Senior Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon.

Who is a candidate for Abdominoplasty (Tummy tuck) surgery?

According the to BAAPS (British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons) anyone who has abdominal skin and fat may be a candidate. Pregnancy can often cause problems for women, which is greatly aggravated by weight loss. The abdominal wall muscles may be weakened by pregnancy and literally pulled apart in the middle (divarification of recti). Men are also affected by weight loss and stretch mark (striae) scars which are left after extreme stretching of the skin. They are usually most apparent on the lower part of the abdomen and there is no specific treatment for these stretch marks, but many of them are excised during an abdominal reduction and those which remain are tightened making them look less obvious

Mr Juma states “This procedure is the removal of excess skin and fat from the abdominal area. It is used to improve the appearance of the stomach including the unmbilicus, incorporating scars and contours and to tighten the muscles. A tummy tuck is not a substitute for exercise, but is beneficial after considerable weight loss and pregnancy, where the skin may appear loose and has developed stretch marks. Even after frequent exercise some women are unable to tighten the abdominal wall, therefore a flatter and smoother abdomen can be achieved with this procedure. The best results are obtained by already being the correct weight in proportion to height. During the operation, your abdominal wall may also be tightened to achieve a flatter stomach.”

The Tummy tuck operation requires a general anaesthetic which normally requires a 2 night stay in hospital and Mr Juma recommends approximately 2 weeks recovery time from work, with a pressure garment necessary for the first few weeks after surgery. Light activities may be resumed at up to 20 days post operatively, with no sporting activities for 6 weeks post surgery.

Please call 0151 707 9050 today to find out more about this procedure and consultation dates.

The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), who are the regulatory body for Plastic Surgery in the UK held their annual meeting on September 23rd 2010.

Mr Juma of Feel Younger Cosmetic Surgery based at Rodney Street in Liverpool is a member of BAAPS and during the meeting, the dangers of rogue cosmetic surgery providers were highlighted along with the new non compulsory register devised for the providers of injectable treatments such as botulinum toxin (Botox) and dermal fillers, Restylane and Juvederm Ultra.

A further agenda for discussion during the conference was the deregulation of intense pulse light (IPL) and laser treatments which is scheduled for October. The potential dangers such as burns, redness and injury from laser treatments not performed correctly are already apparent according to a BAAPS member who claims to have noted a third of an increase in such incidents.

According to consultant plastic surgeon and outgoing President Nigel Mercer; “The proposed deregulation means that providers offering powerful laser treatments will not be overseen by the Care Quality Commission or indeed, anyone. In an environment where clinicians are continually asking for tighter controls it is absurd that the Government should actually be seeking to further deregulate

Injectables and “Botox courses” facilitated over half a day were also topics for discussion at the conference as some are specifically designed to cater for people who have no previous experience in this field.

According to Nigel Mercer;

“These weekend courses have sprung up around the country and a voluntary register such as the one launched last week will be powerless to stop them.

This course in particular even boasted of an attendee who felt that the fact he’d had diabetes and treated himself with insulin for years meant he was qualified to inject his family and friends with Botox!”

Mr Ali Juma of Feel Younger Cosmetic Surgery Liverpool is a Senior Plastic Surgeon in the NHS, a full member of both Plastic Surgery regulatory bodies (BAAPS) and (BAPRAS) and is fully qualified to administer injectable treatments. Mr Juma has 22 years medical experience, therefore for any advice please call 0151 707 9050 and treatments are available at:

Mr Ali Juma Liverpool Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeon talks about Breast Awareness on City Surgery radio show 7th October 2010

Mr Ali Juma leading Liverpool breast surgeon discussed Breast Cancer Awareness issues during the City Surgery radio show on Thursday 7th October 2010 to start the Breast Cancer Awareness month of October in line with Cancer Research UK statistics:

Join the fight – be breast aware

More women are surviving breast cancer than ever before thanks to earlier detection and better treatments

Breast cancer screening (mammography)

Breast screening can help pick up cancers when they are too small to see or feel. All women over 50 are eligible for breast screening.

In England the programme is being extended to include women aged 47 to 73. Women over 70 (or 64 in Northern Ireland) will need to speak to their doctor or breast screening unit to arrange an appointment.

Breast screening is effective, but it is not perfect. It is important that women remember to keep a check on their breasts even if they have been for screening.

Breast awareness

Cancer Research UK encourages women to be breast aware and follow the five point code:

Know what is normal for you

Look at and feel your breasts

Know what changes to look for

Report any changes without delay

Go for breast screening if you are 50 or over.

It’s a good idea for women to get to know how their breasts normally look and feel. This will make it easier to spot any unusual changes that could be signs of cancer and get checked out by a doctor.

Changes to look out for:

Changes in the size, shape or feel of your breasts

A new lump or thickening in one breast or armpit

Any puckering, dimpling or redness of the skin

Changes in the position of the nipple, a rash or nipple discharge

Pain or discomfort that is new to you and felt only on one side

Talk to your GP

If you are worried about having a family history of breast cancer, speak to your GP about a referral to a breast clinic.
