CHEMICAL PEEL
There are several types of chemical peels used to obtain different results, which range from superficial, medium and deep. A good general rule of thumb is that the level of correction is related to the level of skin damage (from the sun, smoking or acne etc). Greater skin damage requires more extensive correction, which in turn equates to a deeper peel, resulting in longer healing time for the skin. A chemical peel removes a layer of skin using a chemical preparation. How deep the peel goes depends on how concentrated the preparation is, whether it is covered once applied and for how long it is left on the skin before being removed. Depending on which type of treatment is used, long lasting and dramatic results may be achieved for fine lines, wrinkles and some facial "scarring" like acne. A younger, smoother and fresher appearance can be restored, with a reduction of imperfections which may be noted when the skin has rejuvenated itself. The treatment maybe repeated for an improved outcome and in some cases optimising creams maybe suggested prior to commencing the treatment.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Your recovery time depends upon the type and level of chemical peel you have had. For a lighter peel the healing time is minimal, usually between 7-10 days. In the case of a medium or deep peel, it may take up to 14-21 days before normal activities can be resumed. Even then the skin may appear fairly red, and special instructions need to be followed to aid healing and minimise the risk of complications and superficial scarring. Sun block is required to be worn after treatment to aid the recovery of the skin and to obtain the best results. In addition optimising creams maybe used after the treatment to obtain a more optimal outcome.
